Culture and monuments in Alicante. Alicante is a city that enjoys a great history of culture, you can go to see expositions and museums completely free of charge. All of the museums and monuments are free to enter and look at except the Archeology museum and the entrance to the castle of Santa Barbara when you enter using the lift.
The most important monuments in Alilcante are located in the main centre of the old town. Here you will find such buildings as the Basilica of Santa Maria, the cathedral of Saint Nicolas, the town council buildings, the castle of Santa Barbara and various museums.
The first contact you can have with the culture and monuments in Alicante is on the Explanada. This a great walkway right in front of the port and is famous for its wave shaped floor tiles in multicolours including red, black and cream. The walkway unites the Plaza Puerta del Mar with Canalejas. It is quite usual to see the Explanada full of people taking a stroll, sitting sunbathing or reading the newspaper. On Sundays there are usually musical acts perfoming, street sellers and the famous hippies all the way along the Explanada.
La Rambla is another very famous street and one of the most imporant roads in Alicante.It separates the old part of the town (casco historico) from the newer parts such as Maissonave. This avenue is also used by people who are wanting to get to the port or the beach and then use the same avenue to return to the town.
