Geography and history. During the history of Alicante many different peoples and cultures have established colonies in the city. From habitants in the Catholic period to Phoenicians, Iberians, Romans and Islamics all attracted by its ease of access by the coast and its privileged location.
Alicante has a large history dating back more than 3000 years.
The earliest remains found in the city date back to the third millenium b.c and were found in the Cova de Fum in Foncalent.
In the fourth century b.c the first civilization takes hold and is known as the iberian-roman settlement Lucentum. This town was located at Tossal de Manises (Albufereta).
It is also runoured that that on the cliffs at Monte Benacantil there was a population of Iberians that were one of the first centres of population in the area.
Once we pass the times of the Roman ocupation we find ourselves in the era of the arabian conquests and the population was moved to cliffs at Benactil to be able to defend itself. At that time the Vila Vella was created. In the XI century it changed its name to Vila Nova.
In the year 1490 Fernando the Catholic names Alicante as a city.
In the XIX century the first train line between Alicante and Madrid arrives and the city walls that stopped the city from growing were knocked down, a move approved by Queen Elizabeth II. This caused the birth of new townships and the new town lighting was installed. Alicante start to progress.
In the XX century the famous fires of San Juan start to arouse international tourist interst and the inauguration of the univerdity takes place. Alicante also becomes in 1993 the seat of the The Trade Marks and Designs Registration Office of the European Union.
Today we can see the marks left by each and every one of the cultures that has been established in Alicante. We can see it in the legacies left by our forebears.
