The city of Alicante is the capital of the province. Its population is over 300,000 habitants and its economy is based mainly around tourism.

Alicante is a city that is situated right on the sea and it is something that you can feel as you walk through the city, especially through the Explanada de Espana. This plaza, surrounded by palm groves and full of people enjoying walking through this incredible part of the world on the Alicante coastline, in the very heart of its capital city, is something to be experienced. When talking about the Alicante coastline, it is worth mentioning its commercial port, one of the most important in Spain and in 1851 when they built the first railways it began to move produce to the markets in Madrid.

Further along the coast we find the the beach named El Postiguet, Alicantes urban beach that is the very representation of this party orientated city, although the best place from which to appreciate this wonderful city, and its beaches, is the Santa Barbara Castle. Alicante is also a university city and the young students take the city of Alicante as their own during the night. It is very common to see groups of young people enjoying themselves at night near the main town council building. There are also many wonderful monuments to visit in Alicante and it is worth mentioning the Saint Nicolas de Bari cathedral, built in 1662 in a Baroque style, the church of Saint Maria, a Gothic inspired building and the San Fernando castle.
