The city of Alicante is the capital of the province. Its population is over 300,000 habitants and its economy is based mainly around tourism.
Alicante is a city that is situated right on the sea and it is something that you can feel as you walk through the city, especially through the Explanada de Espana. Alicante is also a university city and the young students take the city of Alicante as their own during the night. It is very common to see groups of young people enjoying themselves at night near the main town council building. There are also many wonderful monuments to visit in Alicante and it is worth mentioning the Saint Nicolas de Bari cathedral, built in 1662 in a Baroque style, the church of Saint Maria, a Gothic inspired building and the San Fernando castle.
